Attendance

Absences/Tardiness/Attendance

Students are required to attend school regularly and on time. Family vacations are NOT considered excused absences. For unanticipated absences, the parent must notify the school as early as possible on the day of the absence and give the reason therefore. Parents/Guardians are responsible for notifying the school by 9:30 a.m.  when their child is absent and for providing the school the reason for the absence.

If the Main Office does not receive a call by the time listed above. from the student’s parent/guardian stating they will be absent, the parent/guardian will receive a call from the school at the parent/guardian’s residence inquiring about the absence. The District Truant Officer will be sent to the home if the parent/guardian cannot be contacted. Please call the school’s main number, 908-613-8305 x3000, explaining your child’s absence from school. This call must be made each day your child is absent from school.

If a trip of more than 10 school days is planned, parents may be asked to complete a withdrawal form and the child will be taken off the register. If a child is withdrawn from the preschool program, parents would then be able to re-register upon return but are not guaranteed a preschool spot and/or a spot at the same location.

A child is marked “tardy” if arriving 15 minutes after the start of the school day. Removing a child from school before the regular dismissal time should be reserved for only urgent instances, such as serious illness or necessary doctor’s appointments.

Consistent attendance in preschool is important in supporting your child's early learning experience and sets the foundation for strong school habits throughout their lives. Establishing a daily routine with regular wake-up and bedtime hours can help ensure consistent school attendance.

Student Illness Protocol (The 24 Hour Rule):

The best way to prevent the spread of illness in our schools is for children to stay home when they are sick. If your child/ren is absent for 3 or more days, please send in a doctor’s note.

Below is a list of the most commonly seen illnesses and the exclusion time from school required by the South River Board of Education:

  • FEVER: Any child with a temperature of 100 degrees or more is excluded from school.  Children must be FEVER-FREE (temperature below 100 degrees) for a full 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine, BEFORE returning to school.
  • VOMITING AND/OR DIARRHEA: Children who vomit or have diarrhea should remain home until they have not vomited or had diarrhea for a full 24 hours. Diarrhea is defined as 2 or more loose stools during school .
  • STREP THROAT:  Children diagnosed with strep throat need to be on antibiotic therapy for a full 24 hours before returning to school.  They must also be fever-free for a full 24 hours before returning to school.
  • IMPETIGO: This contagious condition requires medication. A physician’s note is required for students to return to school.

Make sure the school has accurate phone numbers where you can be reached during the school day in the event of an illness or emergency.

Please inform the school nurse of any known allergies that a child might have.
